What’s bruschetta and what does it mean?
The term “bruschetta” derives from Brusco, which is toasted. Toasting bread was once necessary for its conservation, to be able to eat it even if it was no longer fresh.
Today, however, the term has taken on a different meaning because it has become a dish proposed throughout Italy both as an aperitif and as a single dish.
The bruschetteria is a type of restaurant born some years ago in which the classic “bruschetta” is served. Slices of toasted bread, seasoned as you like.
Our taste experience of a bruschetta around Lake Como
Searching for a restaurant to eat bruschetta around Lake Como, we came across Ul Sciur Bruscotteria.
It was a Friday evening and we were pretty hungry. A few reviews and photos were enough to convince us. We booked through The Fork app and went to the restaurant.
The environment and atmosphere of the Ul Sciur bruscotteria
Located in Como city center, the restaurant is completely different from a typical Italian trattoria. The style used is rustic, with some modern features. Wood is everywhere also on the stone counter and the chandeliers.
The seats inside are about twenty to which are added, in the warmest period, a couple of tables outside.
What to eat at Ul Sciur Bruscotteria
We were greeted by the owner, a very nice and helpful woman. She leaves us the menu and immediately we ask her some questions about the restaurant and the proposals.
The menu is very simple, there are traditional bruschettas, with the same ingredients you can find in any pizzeria, and the gourmet ones.
Here’s a quick review of the bruschettas that you can find at the restaurant:
- the classic one with oil, tomatoes and basil;
- with ham;.
- four cheeses and nuts;
- speck and zola cheese;
- the iberian;
- the napolina;
- the tropea;
- ham and artichokes;
- the arrabbiata;
- bufalina cheese;
- pistachio goat;
- the valtellinese.
The price range varies from 3,50 to 7 euros.
Gourmet bruschettas are less than the classic one but all very tasty:
- Sciur, that we have tasted and we will tell you what it is;
- taleggio cheese and pears;
- ham and porcini mushrooms;
- granbiscotto ham.
The price range for the gourmet bruschettas is slightly higher. From 7 to 7.90 euros.
Ul Sciur’s sweet bruschetta is called nutellosa. The bruschetta with nutella, at a cost of 4.90 euros.
You can compose your bruschetta using the ingredients of the menu. This is especially useful for those with special needs, that don’t want to deprive themselves of anything!
What did we eat at Ul Sciur bruscotteria
As soon as we have finished reading the menu, we immediately focus on gourmet bruschettas and taste Sciur and Portofino.
Sciur bruschetta is prepared with oil, tomato, mozzarella and goat cheese with wild berries. Goat cheese has a very particular flavor.
You can taste the berries which lighten the strong flavor of the seasoned cheese.
Portofino bruschetta instead consists of oil, mozzarella, Genoese pesto, cherry tomatoes, and shrimp. A delicate flavor made for everyone.
In the end, instead of ending with a dessert, we decided to share a vegetarian bruschetta made with oil, cherry tomatoes, grilled vegetables, and mozzarella.
Even this bruschetta in its simplicity has done its duty to close the meal.
The bread from these bruschettas is a slice of toasted white bread. Everything is prepared on sight by the staff.
In accompaniment to bruschetta, we tasted a glass of red Baglio Delle Cicale, a Sicilian merlot with a fruity taste that enhanced the berries of goat cheese and homemade sangria.
A drink that here at ul Sciur can be tasted during the weekend. Very good, light and refreshing.
Coffee and bill
We order our coffee and ask for the bill. Total of 33,30 euros for:
- two gourmet bruschettas;
- one traditional bruschetta;
- a glass of wine;
- two coffees.
It was a very pleasant and different experience that you can enjoy from lunch to dinner.
Where to park to go to bruschetteria
We are lucky because we live 10 minutes on foot from the center so we tend to never use the car.
To reach the bruschetteria in the shortest time possible, our advice is to use one of the autosilo car parks just outside the walls.
